When the owner of Benny’s buddy, Ivan, a Chocolate Labradoodle, couldn’t find her diamond necklace, and the puppy wasn’t acting himself, they took him to the vet. An x-ray showed the diamond heart in Ivan’s belly, from which it was, umm, returned a few days later, narrowly avoiding surgery.

Now, Dr. Jennifer Mlekoday at West Chelsea Veterinary Hospital in New York City has compiled a list of the Top 10 Things Pets Swallow. And sure enough, jewelry is on the list. But homework was not – sorry kids. The list:

1. Socks
2. Underwear
3. Pantyhose
4. Rocks
5. Balls
6. Chew Toys
7. Corn Cobs
8. Bones
9. Hair ties
10. Sticks

Pins, pens, and paper also rate high. This may sound funny, but it can be anything but because these things can obstruct and cause damage to the intestinal track, become lift-threatening, and often require surgery.

Please, please, pay attention to what your pet picks up, and be careful to keep dangerous items away.
