A Disabled Dog and Cat With Lessons for Our Times
By BL Ochman
One of the most extraordinary things about blogging is the people you meet as a result. When I checked Pawfun Blog’s comments today, I found a comment from Barbara Techel, Author & Mom to Frankie, the Walk ‘N Roll Dog. And that led me to Frankie’s website, where he teaches us to be positive and keep on rolling – which strikes me as just about the right message for our times. Frankie’s also got his own book with the message that animals with disabilities deserve a chance at life.
A post on Frankie’s blog took me to the Almost Perfect Pets blog, which explores the way society views companion animals with disabilities.
The earless cat who teaches children never to hurt animals
That’s where I read about Melissa Webb, a bookkeeper, and her 9-year-old daughter, Lexy, an aspiring veterinarian, from Kingsville, Texas, who adopted an abused cat they call Zoe, whose ears were cut off by some crazy person when she was two weeks old. She was rescued by Animal Rescue Kleberg (ARK) in Kingsville, Texas, from the dumpster where she’d been thrown and left to die.
Ms. Webb helped Lexy decided to write a book about their kitten’s experience, ‘Zoe the Earless Cat’. The Webbs visit schools with Zoe, telling them what happened to their cat, and asking the children to vow to them never hurt animals. Schoolchildren are also inspired that Lexy, who’s close to their age, wrote a book.
Cute pet pictures and funny animal videos are all over the Internet, including here, in Pawfun Blog. But there’s a world of inspiring and loving animal stories that we urge you to learn about and pass on. As Bridget Pilloud, of Pets are Talking, who writes about animal communication in Pawfun Blog, can tell you, animals have a lot to teach us.

Thank you, BL for featuring Frankie and Zoe on your blog! Bringing a positive face and voice to animals with disabilities is so important to me. Animals are living, breathing beings and deserve to live a quality life… even if they have a disability. I just love your website and your blog and look forward to your posts.
