bo_dayoneNew pet parents – like the Obamas – take on enormous responsibility when they bring home their puppy. Celebrity pet trainer Andrea Arden, who’s trained the dogs of stars like Norah Jones, Robert De Niro and Conan O’Brien, says the Obamas will succeed if they establish a routine of superior nutrition, exercise and regular veterinary check-ups from the start.

What’s your pet parenting advice for the Obamas?

Here’s mine:
Pawfun mascot BennyBix Ochman Labradoodle is my second dog, and I can tell you from experience that a well-exercised dog is a happy dog. Walks – and I don’t care how far you go – are simply not enough for a big, active breed like a Portie. Large and small dogs need to exercise off-leash in a safe place, with other dogs, every day.

Every single day. Benny and I walk three miles round-trip every morning (except if it’s pouring rain) and he gets to run off-leash in Central Park. A dog run or a dog park are great too, as long as play is supervised and the pet parents who frequent the place pay attention to their dogs.
