Ask Dr Elliot: Should I vaccinate my 11 year-old cat?
By BL Ochman
A Pawfun Blog reader asks: “My vet just left a message that my cat, Cole, is due for his annual vaccinations.. I’m debating whether I should. He’s 11 and very healthy (and handsome). What are your thoughts?
Pawfun’s holistic veterinarian Dr Jill Elliot answers: This is a hot topic and there is much debate in the veterinary community about how and when to vaccine cats and dogs.
I do believe all cats need to be seen by their veterinarian at least once a year. After they are 10 years old, twice a year is better. This is so the cat can get a good physical exam, weight, check teeth, look for any unusually growths or changes in the skin.
I suggest getting a senior wellness blood (CBC/SMA/T4/FT4) and urine analysis as well yearly for cats 10 and older. I do not believe INDOOR cats need to be vaccinated yearly.
As a NY State-licensed veterinarian, I must tell you that it is the law that all cats and dogs need to be vaccinated for Rabies at least every three years. There is no other legal requirement for any other vaccine in cats or dogs.
However you are the caretaker of your cat and can make the final decision on this. Cats are very sensitive to vaccines. There is ample evidence that some get tumors at the vaccine site from the inflammation caused by the vaccines.
