Pig's Ears

Pig's Ears

Although people are cutting back on gifts for friends and family, recent surveys indicate the family pet will still be getting gifts – and chews are always a popular gift. Beware!

After a recent recall by Pet Carousel of pig’s ears and beef hoof products, Consumer Reports, and Pawfun, warn against giving these products to your dog.

The products are recalled because they may be contaminated with salmonella. The chewies are sold under the brand names Choo Hooves, Dentley’s, Doggie Delight and Pet Carousel at PetSmart and other pet stores.

According to Consumer Reports’ Safety Blog, Salmonella can affect both humans and animals. People handling dry pet food and/or pet treats can become infected, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after touching the treats or any surfaces exposed to them.

Pets with salmonella infections may become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may experience only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.

Infected, but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. Contact your veterinarian immediately If your pet has consumed any of the affected products or is experiencing any of these symptoms. That way, Fido can be feeling great while he/she gets more gifts than anyone else.
