Dog fur vest and hat

When it’s 10 degrees and Benny Bix is rolling around in the snow, it’s hard not to wish I had a coat as warm as his. Well, it turns out, I could.

There are a whole bunch of people who spin yarn from your dog or cat’s fur so you can knit with it. And some of them will knit scarves, hats, mittens and sweaters for you after they spin the yarn.

One ounce of pet fiber can yield up to 27 yards of finished two-ply yarn; a scarf, for example, can require up to 300 yards of yarn, according to VIP Fibers, which spins 100% per fur yarn.

This Squidoo page lists spinners and knitters who can have you wearing a hair shirt in no time flat.
