A tiny stray female puppy, nicknamed Xiaosa, has become an online celebrity after she ran a 1,139-mile bicycle race from Sichuan province to Tibet.

The little white dog ran alongside the group for 24 days, covering as many as 37 miles each day and climbing 12 mountains with altitudes of 13,000 feet and higher.

One of the competitors in the race, 22-year-old student Zhang Heng, said they first spotted her “lying, tired, on the street around Yajiang, Sichuan province, so we fed her and then she followed our team,” Heng said. Xiaosa kept running even when many riders stopped in difficult sections to take the bus, Heng said.

A week into the race, Heng started a blog about Xiaosa’s epic journey called “Go Go Xiao Sa,” which attracted more than 37,000 followers in two weeks. He sometimes carried her in a basket on the back of his bike.

“Many people stopped cycling in some sections, then took the bus, but the dog made it,” Heng told China Daily. Xiao Sa became a companion and a mascot for the long journey.

Heng said he now wants to adopt Xiaosa, and doesn’t think he could have completed the grueling race without her enthusiasm. “I would like to take the dog home and take care of her, she has been a stray on the road for a long time,” he said/
