Here’s a site that elevates funny cat pictures to art. And Fat Cat Art is my new favorite blog, Great Artists Mews, in which a fat orange cat inserts himself, Zelig-like, into famous paintings.

This fall, Emmy-winning producer Michael B. Kaplan (Roseanne, Frasier) will launch a new comedy series, “Dog With a Blog,” about a dog who not only blogs, but also talks.

After a family adopts a dog named Stan, the children learn that he can talk and write. And of course, what he wants to write is a blog. I don’t know what he calls his blog, but Pawfun is taken.

The series will run on The Disney Channel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“We practiced with the cutlery in advance,” they said, “and both dogs very quickly figured it out. This video was shot in one take, no cuts or editing – and both dogs had a wonderful time..The hand coordination was not preplanned – since everything was up to the dogs – but we both intuitively acted on the feeling of the dogs’ movement, plus we could hear from the “waitresses” comments, what the dogs were doing.”

It’s definitely going to be an extra ruff campaign.

As anyone who reads the wonderful Gail Collins in The New York Times can tell you, she’s mentioned – 19 times so far – that Mitt Romney once strapped the family Irish Setter, Seamus, to the roof of the car and drove to Canada.

And now, Seamus is having his revenge with a Twitter and a Facebook page, both of which are rapidly gaining fans. Poor Seamus was so scared, he pooped all over the car, but Romney, on a strict schedule, never stopped. (Benny was horrified when I told him this story.)

As NPR reports, “The story of Seamus the Irish setter is not an Internet rumor. It first appeared in the august pages of the Boston Globe in 2007, when the paper published a seven-part profile of Romney, a former Massachusetts governor who had just launched a presidential run.”

Not to be outdone, the only thing grosser than that is Newt Gingrich’s Pets for Newt website. Blecch. Benny barfed when I showed it to him.

Tucker the Schnoodle sings and plays the piano at least three or four times a day according to his owners, who note that he isn’t getting any better at it. Benny likes to howl along to this video.

Simon Tofield’s cat behaves exactly the way my kitty, Noni does when he wants attention. Noni’s more thorough though: he’d also be sure to spill my coffee.

This video – and Denver’s smile – has been viewed over 10 million times since March 2011 on YouTube. She’s got more than 43,000 fans on Facebook.

A scientific breakthrough in medicine is helping a decorated Marine learn to walk again after a serious injury in Iraq.

The Marine, a German Shepherd named Lex, and his partner Corporal Dustin Lee, were part of an elite team trained to sniff out bombs.

In March 2007, Lex and Corporal Lee were hit by a rocket-propelled grenade that took Lee’s life and left Lex with 50 pieces of schrapnel in his body, and unable to walk.

Baltimore-area veterinarian Doctor Lee Morgan is using canine stem cell therapy to help Lex walk again. “This is definitely the wave of the future for dogs with all kinds of joint problems,” says Benny Bix Ochman Labradoodle’s vet, Dr. Jill Elliot.

How stem cell therapy works
The breakthrough is stem cell therapy developed by Vet-Stem laboratories. Regenerative medicine uses a concentrated form of autologous adipose-derived adult stem cells to treat traumatic and degenerative diseases, including bowed tendons, ligament injuries, osteoarthritis, and osteochondral defects in horses and dogs.

“The idea is that these stem cells will regenerate some of the lost cartilage, some of the lost tissue, maybe even some of the lost nerve function,” Dr. Morgan told Baltimore station WBFF.

Stem cells are multi-potent and can differentiate into tendon, ligament, bone, cartilage, cardiac, nerve, muscle, blood vessels, fat, and liver tissue, according to Vet-Stem’s website. The stromal fraction that is harvested from adipose tissue is a heterogeneous mixture of regenerative cells.

Human trials are already underway for advanced heart disease, osteoarthritis, fractures, liver and renal disease.
